This is the burrito that started it all, my Chicken Avocado Burrito. When I first shared it on social media, I had no idea it would reach over three million views. It’s easy to see why: juicy shredded chicken, creamy avocado, fresh tomatoes, and a touch of lime all wrapped in a crisp golden tortilla.
As a nutrition coach, I love how this recipe balances macronutrients naturally. You get lean protein from the chicken and Greek yogurt, fiber from whole wheat tortillas, and heart-healthy fats from avocado. It’s a satisfying meal that supports both training and recovery without feeling restrictive.
Whether you prefer calling it a grilled chicken burrito, avocado burrito, or even a California-style burrito, this version keeps it light, fresh, and full of flavor.
Serves 2
1. Shred the chicken
Cook and shred the chicken using two forks or a hand mixer for quick results.
Coach tip: Grilling adds a smoky depth that enhances the burrito’s flavour and makes it feel more like a classic chicken fajita burrito.
2. Prepare the filling
In a bowl, mash the avocado with lime juice. Add the shredded chicken, Greek yogurt, tomatoes, spring onion, and seasoning. Mix until evenly coated.
Coach tip: Greek yogurt provides the creaminess you’d get from ranch or mayo, but with more protein and less fat.
3. Assemble the burritos
Spoon the mixture evenly onto the tortillas. Sprinkle cheese over each, then roll tightly, folding in the sides first.
Coach tip: For a variation, add a few strips of cooked bacon and a drizzle of ranch dressing for a chicken bacon ranch burrito twist.
4. Toast or air fry
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and toast each burrito seam-side down for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
Alternatively, air fry at 180°C / 360°F for 5–7 minutes.
Coach tip: You can air fry frozen burritos too — just increase the cooking time to 12–15 minutes.

Can you air fry frozen burritos?
Yes. Air fry from frozen at 180°C / 360°F for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway for even crisping.
Can I prepare these in advance?
Absolutely. Wrap assembled burritos in foil and refrigerate for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
What’s the best cheese to use?
Any cheese that melts smoothly—cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack all work well.
The Chicken & Avocado Burrito is a perfect balance of high protein, healthy fats, and delicious flavours. This dish is not only satisfying but also incredibly easy to prepare, making it ideal for a quick lunch or dinner. Combining tender shredded chicken, creamy avocado, tangy Greek yogurt, and melted cheese, this burrito is packed with nutrients while remaining light and fresh.
